Invasion of the Dust Mites: A Horror Story
We know you don’t want to hear this, but we have to tell you because when it comes to dust mites, ignorance is not bliss: You have a lot of dust mites in your Cocoa home, and these microscopic arachnids – yes, they’re spiders, kind of – are highly potent allergens that can worsen or even cause severe allergies. And they’re everywhere in your house.
We at India Cooling & Heating, Inc. don’t like to be fear mongers, but you should know that your bed alone may contain up to 10 million dust mites, which feed on the dead skin cells you shed every night. And we really don’t like to be the bearers of bad news, but each of those ten million dust mites, uh, excretes twenty droppings a day. Just one week of dust mite activity in your bed alone means that you’re sleeping on – and inhaling – 1,400,000,000 microscopic dust mite patties, and that’s nothing to sneeze at because it’s the droppings that are the most highly allergenic part of the dust mite.
So how do you get rid of these little beasts? Well, you don’t, exactly. Dust mites are an unfortunate fact of life, and they’re not going anywhere. But you can vastly reduce the populations of dust mites in your home to help alleviate allergies and other respiratory ailments and quell the collywobbles. It’s easy if you just follow us…
Simple Guide for Whacking Huge Numbers of Dust Mites
If you want to whack huge numbers of dust mites, you won't keep your home as dust-free as possible. Dust mites, dust. Dust, dust mites. See the connection? Dust is largely comprised of the 50 million skin cells you shed every day, and that’s better than a free Vegas buffet to your dust mite roommates. Here’s the best way to get rid of dust – and hence, dust mites – in your home:
  • After you dust, vacuum. Invest in a vacuum cleaner that’s equipped with a HEPA filter, which will filter the air that moves through before sending it out through the exhaust.
  • While you’re dusting and vacuuming, and for a half-hour afterward, turn the thermostat fan setting to the ON position so that your A/C fan will suck all pollutants that go airborne during dusting and vacuuming through the system’s air filter.
  • Speaking of filters, always choose the highest quality, a pleated filter that your cooling system will accommodate – generally, that will be a MERV 12 filter, which will trap over 90 percent of the dust mites floating around in the air.
  • Get rid of clutter! Clutter begets dust, and dust begets dust mites. Pare down the bric-a-brac, put away the piles of clothes, and keep your home as clutter-free as possible.
  • Wash your bedding every week in hot water to kill the dust mites. While it’s in the wash, vacuum your mattress thoroughly, and pound your pillow outside.
  • Invest in a mite-proof mattress cover and mite-proof pillowcases to keep the riffraff from burrowing into your mattress and pillows.
  • Keep the humidity level in your home at the optimum 30 to 50 percent range. We know that’s kind of tough in Cocoa, where the outdoor humidity is a force to reckon with, but strategically placed portable dehumidifiers or a whole-house dehumidifier, which is built into your HVAC system and features a humidistat, can help. See, dust mites thrive in high humidity, but they don’t reproduce nearly as fast or live as long in lower humidity.

You spend 90 percent of your time indoors, and much of that is spent at home. Taking care of the air you breathe is taking care of your good health and your overall wellbeing. India cooling & Heating, Inc. is committed to helping our Cocoa neighbors and all of those in surrounding India County communities maintain high-quality indoor air. We’re not just about staying cool but staying healthy as well.
